Chapter four of six

Last
Call

12:58 PM · From a county address

Hospital cafeteria. A tray you bought because the woman at the register looked at you like you needed to buy something. The doctor came by at noon and said your father squeezed her hand on command, twice, which she said the way people say a good thing they are afraid to say. Your phone lights up on the table. Not a text. An email, from an address that ends in a county.

Ten minutes. She writes it down first. Then she texts.
