A Pocket Dread story
At Thanksgiving, Marion makes her family pick a safe word so a cloned voice can never fool them. In February the phone says Jenna, Jenna is crying, and the voice says the word.
Marion Fenwick is sixty-four and lives alone in Florida. At Thanksgiving she makes her family pick a safe word, because a woman from the sheriff’s office told the library that the calls now sound like your own child. Five people know the word: her daughter Jenna, who sells houses and talks to empty rooms on camera for a living; Jenna’s husband Cole; their son Theo, fifteen, with a gaming headset around his neck; and Marion’s brother Lou, who writes everything down. In February the phone says Jenna, and the voice says the word. A detective who writes while you talk works it one dull question at a time.
Stories that unfold at the listener's pace.
